Synopsis:
The Tari Badaya is a classical dance like the
Serimpi- and Bedhåyå-dances of the Central Javanese courts. After the fall of
some kingdoms great parts of Java were ruled by regents, being vassals of the
Mataram kingdom. Following the customs of the Central Javanese sovereigns the
Sundanese regents also developed their own dances at their own courts. This Tari
Badaya origins from the regency of Ciamis, southeast of Bandung. Thanks to the
late Raden Sambas Wirakusumah, Raden Nugraha Sudiredja could embody this dance
in 1958.
The Tari Badaya is an elegant abstract dance with an evident
Sundanese style and character. It shows the cultural refinement at the
Sunadanese regencies and the way the regents imposed their honourable
guests.
