Synopsis:

The Beksan Gambyong Pangkur is a depiction of a joyful mood with a touch of feminine coquetry. In this dance the harmonious unity of movement and music, in particularly the 'kendang' the drum is beautifully blended and shows the ability of the dancer to enhance the music in her interpretation of the dance.
The Gambyong-dances have their roots from the traditional Javanese folklore in which semi-professional female dancers contribute to the gaiety and enjoyment at parties. This makes that this kind of dances is generally known to the common people and therefore not to be found in the repertory of the 'kratons', the palaces. Nowadays, if dancers of noble descent or have a palacedance-background want to perform this dance, it is dressed in the way as shown above with covered shoulders and a crown.
